Surfnet Delivers 400% Increase in Internet Speed for Fiber Customers in Rural San Luis Obispo County

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA — Surfnet Communications, Inc. Surfnet), today announced fiber internet customers in San Luis Obispo County, including the communities of Shandon, Branch, Corbett Canyon, Whitley Gardens and Old Oak Park, will see their internet speeds increase this month by up to 400% over current download speeds.

Crews installed the first Surfnet Fiber lines earlier this year, making fast and reliable Surfnet Fiber internet available in remote areas of the county.

“Everyone deserves access to high-speed internet, no matter where you live,ˮ said Ken Nye, Surfnetʼs Chief Operating Officer. “As customers demand faster internet speeds, Surfnet is here to meet those needs, without having to retrofit our current technology. We can increase speed with existing infrastructure and donʼt need to go back into the field with disruptive construction work. When we say the future is fiber, we mean it.ˮ

Surfnet is continuing to build fiber infrastructure in San Luis Obispo throughout 2026, connecting hundreds of families and businesses in rural areas to faster fiber internet.

Customers will experience faster speeds that support multiple connected devices throughout the home — including televisions, laptops, smartphones and other smart devices — without sacrificing performance. This enhanced connectivity is increasingly important as households rely on more bandwidth for streaming, gaming, video conferencing, remote work and online learning. The increased speeds also help small businesses operate more efficiently, enabling smoother day-to-day operations and improved customer experiences.

Surfnetʼs three internet speed tiers and the increases they will see:

  • Entry tier: Speeds will increase from 100 Mbps to 500 Mbps

  • Mid tier: Speeds will increase from 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps

  • Top tier: Speeds will increase from 1 Gbps to as much as 2 Gbps

Surfnetʼs investment in rural San Luis Obispo County is funded in part by grants from the State of California. Since 2024, Surfnet — in partnership with nonprofit California Broadband Alliance — has secured $25 million in grant funding from the California Public

Utilities Commission to provide fiber internet to remote, rural areas in San Luis Obispo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties.
