Over the past 30 years, telecommunications has enjoyed
three major changes, each a real epoch. The first, in
the '70s, was digital. The second was packet switching.
The third was wireless. Each spurred some fundamental
innovation. The first launched multimedia, among other
things. The second, "always on" connectivity. And the
third, functional mobility. Combined with worldwide
deregulation, these generational changes have given the
consumer more services at lower costs. This is especially
true in cellular telephony, which has had an enormous
cultural impact around the world. (The effect has been
least visible in the US, but that's another story.).
